The classic board game Risk has been a favourite among players worldwide since French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse created it in the 1950s. Originally known as “La Conquête du Monde” or “The Conquest of the World”, this dynamic strategy game lets players assume roles as military commanders as they engage in the conquest of the world. The game requires a decent mixture of diplomacy, alliances, and military might, as players aim to emerge victorious and achieve world domination.
Rules of Risk
Risk is a board game that two to six players can play. The game’s board represents a world map that is divided into six continents, each consisting of several territories. At the beginning of each game, the players randomly assign territories, taking turns to place their armies in their assigned areas. The number of armies assigned to each player depends on the number of players participating in the game.
On each turn, the players can either reinforce their existing armies or launch an attack on their enemy’s territories. To reinforce, the player must move one of their armies from one of their territories to another, while attacking will have them move their armies from one of their territories into an adjacent territory controlled by an opponent.
When attacking, the number of armies the player has determines the number of dice they can roll, up to a maximum of three. The defender then subsequently rolls a number of dice based on the number of armies defending the territory under attack, up to a maximum of two dice. The highest dice roll from each player is then compared, and whoever is the high roller wins in either attacking or defending. If the defender wins, though, the attacker must remove one of their armies from the attacking territory.
Players receive additional armies at the beginning of each turn based on the number of territories that they control, as well as any bonus reinforcements that are given for controlling an entire continent. Players can continue attacking and fortifying until they run out of armies or choose to stop. The game is concluded whenever one player occupies all of the territories on the board or if all other players have been eliminated.
Winning Strategies
To emerge victorious in Risk, you must carefully consider your strategies and make calculated decisions about when to attack, defend, or fortify your territories. With so many variables to consider, staying one step ahead of your opponents is crucial if you want to come out on top. To help you achieve success, we’ve compiled a list of winning strategies that can increase your chances of dominating the game:
Expand Your Territories
Capturing new territories is crucial to increasing your army size and generating more resources. Players should aim to capture continents to gain bonus reinforcements and strengthen their positions.
Protect Your Borders
Defending your territories is just as important as attacking. Players should fortify their borders and closely monitor enemy movements to prevent being overrun.
Form Alliances
Working with other players in the game and forming alliances can provide a significant advantage over your opponents. Therefore, observing the strengths and weaknesses of other players and collaborating to achieve shared objectives is crucial.
Use Diplomacy
To gain an advantage without resorting to war, it’s wise to negotiate strategically with other players. Consider making deals or alliances with them to avoid costly battles.
